Welcome to District Gazetteer (Revenue) Department

The literal meaning of Gazetteer is Geographical Index or Geographical Dictionary. Its scope is very wide. It is a complete compilation of a country/state/district and its social, political, forest, industry, important historical places, culture and cultural activities etc. within a limited range and in a readable manner. The Gazetteer writing was started during the British period. This is a very important reference book.

The post-independence district gazetteers were appraised in terms of their content and the political, social and economic dimensions of an independent and rising India were included in the gazetteers as subject matter.

The early gazetteers were primarily conceived to assist the colonial rulers in the administration of their territories. The first series of Gazetteers came out in 1815 by the company.
